23/03/10 - Gas leak disrupts Sydney peak hour traffic
Published: 23rd March 2010
At about 3.30pm today a gas leak caused the closure of Military Rd at Neutral Bay. The gas main appears to have been affected by a backhoe working on footpath repairs. Two fire crews responded from Neutral Bay and Mosman and provided water spray protection as the Gemena Gas Emergency Response crew worked to seal the pipe. A 100 metre exclusion zone was established forcing the evacuation of several hundred people from shops and residences for about one and a half hours. Military Road was finally re-opened at 5.00pm however the incident brought traffic to a standstill and heavily impacted peak hour traffic leaving Sydney for the Northern Beaches area. The circumstances around the cause of the incident are currently being investigated.
