Surry Hills - Large gas leak - hundreds evacuated
Published: 17th March 2010
A large gas leak caused the evacuation of several hundred residents from several streets in Surry Hills. A backhoe ruptured a gas main just before 9.00am this morning at the intersection of Belvoir and Clisdell Streets. Fire Rescue Officers from four Sydney fire stations attended the incident directly opposite the Belvoir Street Theatre. Numerous surrounding houses, residential units and factories were evacuated as a precaution. Gas company workers, under the protection of fire brigade hose sprays, took two hours to locate and seal off the leak. After further air sampling the area was declared safe at around 11.30am and all evacuated people were allowed to return.
