Electrical substation fire - Liverpool Street, Sydney

7.45pm: The fire has now been extinguished and ventilation of the substation is currently underway. Liverpool Street is gradually being reopened. See www.rta.nsw.gov.au for traffic updates. 6pm: Just before 5pm tonight firefighters were called to an underground electrical substation fire located under Liverpool Street, between Elizabeth and College streets, Sydney. Thirty firefighters from six surrounding fire stations are currently on scene, using large quantities of CO2 in an attempt to extinguish the fire. Energy Australia authorities are assisting. Liverpool Street is currently closed in both directions and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area. Minor power outages have impacted some local buildings. No evacuations are required at this time.
