Large motor boat fires at the Newport Marina

Early this afternoon firefighters from Mona Vale and Avalon responded to numerous 000 calls to a number of large motor boats alight at the Newport Marina in Crescent Rd, Newport. Crews arrived within eight minutes to find three motor cruises well alight and marine staff attempting to extinguish the fires and release the vessels from the wharf. Firefighters were quick to confine the fire to the vessels and separate them from the adjoining vessels and wharf. Other crews attending to assist in this large incident were from Narrabeen, Dee Why, Hazardous Materials response unit from Greenacre and the Duty Commander from Crows Nest. In all six vessels were severely damaged by fire. Fire Brigade hazmat crews are assessing and cleaning up any contamination in the area. NSW Rural Fire Service firefighters provided valuable assistance during this very difficult incident. Firefighters were also assisted by Police and Water Police. Investigations are currently determining the cause and origin of the fire.
