Unit fire in Elizabeth Bay
Published: 11th June 2009
In the early hours of June 11 firefighters from Darlinghurst and the City responded to an automatic fire alarm to a unit in Ithica Rd Elizabeth Bay. Firefighters arrived within six minutes to find a unit well alight on the top floor of an eight level building. Firefighters battled extreme conditions to bring the fire under control and stop it spreading to adjoining units. Firefightres had to ascend eight levels to fight the fire. Three occupants were treated for smoke inhalation and approximately eighty people were safely evacuated. Other crews attending were The Rocks, Woollahra and the Inspector from the City. Investigations revealed that the fire was started by a two bar electrical heater left on. This is a timely reminder for residents to be extra vigilant with appliances during the winter months.
