Regional NSWFB Station Commanders meet to plan for the future

Published: 1st May 2009

NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) station commanders and deputy captains from as far south as Tea Gardens and as far north as Woolgoolga, will meet in Port Macquarie this weekend for their annual Station Commander's Conference.

The two-day conference will cover a range of topics, providing station commanders with the opportunity to learn about new NSWFB initiatives in areas such IT, training and recruitment.

Assistant Commissioner Jim Hamilton, Director of Regional Operations, said it was an opportunity for senior management to hear about local issues and challenges first-hand.

"The senior firefighters at this conference are the frontline firefighters who manage fire stations and firefighters, respond to emergencies and understand the issues and challenges in their local communities.

"We want to make sure they have the skills and knowledge they need to continue servicing to their local communities.

Assistant Commissioner Hamilton thanked firefighters across the Mid North Coast for the great work they did in their communities on daily basis and especially in the recent flood emergencies.

"Many of the firefighters here on the Mid North Coast are retained, or on-call, firefighters, who devote many hours outside of their regular jobs and family responsibilities to protect their local communities.

"Retained firefighters, together with their full-time colleagues, are vital to NSWFB operations across regional NSW and their dedication and commitment is crucial to ensuring the safety of residents in hundreds of communities throughout the state."

Editor's note: Fire stations across the Mid North Coast will be open to the public on Sunday 3 May for the NSWFB’s annual Open Day. Contact your local fire station for further information about local activities or visit www.fire.nsw.gov.au
