Residential unit fire in Surry Hills
Published: 13th April 2009
Early this morning firefighters from City of Sydney, Redfern, Darlinghurst, Pyrmont and the Duty Commander responded to a residential unit fire in Foveaux Street, Surry Hills. The automatic fire alarm system in the building alerted fire crews to the emergency and crews were on scene in seven minutes to find smoke pouring from the second level of the four level unit block. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly contain the fire and carried out a thorough search of the unit on fire and the units above. The unit was severely damaged and neighbouring units suffered smoke and water damage. Twenty people were evacuated and three people taken to hospital. Firefighters ventilated the building to remove smoke and carried out clean up (salvage) work. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
