Firefighters will open fire station doors for the NSW Fire Brigades' (NSWFB) annual Open Day on Sunday 3 May 2009.

"This free event will give everyone the opportunity to meet their local firefighters and learn more about home fire safety as we head into the winter months - the worst time of year forhouse fires," NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) Commissioner Mullins said.

He said Open Day was one of the biggest days on the NSWFB calendar.

"Our firefighters are here to help people avoid and reduce fire dangers in their homes and this event will give everyone a chance to learn ways to protect themselves and theirfamilies in a fire or other emergency.

"Kids can inspect the firefighting equipment used by our firefighters, sit behind the wheel ofa fire truck and learn more about Australia's largest fire and rescue service.

"For adults, they can enjoy a barbeque and speak with local firefighters first hand about smoke alarms and home escape plans. It will be a fantastic day and I encourage everyoneto visit their local fire brigade station between 10am and 2pm."
