Fire and Hazmat at the airport

Firefighters from Mascot, Botany, Arncliffe, Hazmat specialists from Alexandria and Greenacre and the Duty Commander responded to a fire in a shed at Sydney Airport this morning. The fire was extinguished by Airport firefighters very quickly however it breached a number of drums, located in a bunded area, containing a hazardous material. Firefighters in fully encapsulated protective suits identified the substance and established an exclusion zone with 20 people evacuated from the immediate area. Two people were taken to hospital and a further two treated at the scene, suffering ill effects from the incident. Hazmat specialist remained on scene to conduct air sampling as firefighters in protective suits vacuumed the chemical into a contracted waste recovery vehicle.
