Hazmat incident at Campbelltown
Published: 3rd March 2009
Just after noon fire crews responded to a Hazmat incident in Macarthur Square, Campbelltown. Firefighters from Campbelltown, Rosemeadow, St Andrews, Narellan, Hazmat specialists from Greenacre and the Duty Commander attended the emergency with the first crews on scene in five minutes. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus discovered a split air conditioning pipe had resulted in a leak of refrigerant gas. Over 500 staff and shoppers were evacuated while firefighters isolated the leak. One shop remained closed but fire crews used extraction fans to clear the rest of the shopping centre allowing people to return. Firefighters remained at the centre until the air conditioning gas had been decanted.
