Building fire in Fairy Meadow
Published: 24th February 2009
Numerous Triple Zero (000) calls were received this evening to a fire in a two storey carpet warehouse on the Princess Highway, Fairy Meadow. Fire crews from Wollongong, Balgownie, Corrimal, Bulli, Coledale, Dapto, Thirroul, Warrawong, Hazmat specialists from Shellharbour and the Duty and Zone Commanders responded, with the first crews on scene in six minutes. Firefighters were confronted with a building totally involved with fire and the rear roof collapsed shortly after arrival. Fire crews, using a hydraulic ladder fire engine and numerous fire hoses, contained the fire to the building, saving adjoining properties. Hazmat crews continually monitored the atmosphere and water run off. Fire crews remained at the incident overnight as the roof collapse and the danger of walls collapsing hampered crews reaching some areas of fire. The fire was extinguished the next day and investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire.
