Tuggerah factory fire
Published: 11th February 2009
This morning firefighters from Wyong, Berkley Vale, Bateau Bay, The Entrance, Gosford, Toukley, Wyoming, Newcastle and the Duty Commander and Zone Commanders responded to a large factory fire in Mildon Street, Tuggerah. Numerous Triple Zero (000) calls were received and fire crews arrived to find the single storey factory engulfed in flames with the fire threatening to spread to adjoining premises, one of which was a timber yard. Firefighters protected the neighbouring properties and using two hydraulic ladder fire engines and several fire hoses were able to contain the fierce fire and bring it under control. Firefighting operations were challenging as the factory contained a large amount of plastics that were used in trophies and the adjoining properties were under threat from the fire. Fire crews remained on scene over night as the roof had collapsed requiring an excavator to remove building rubble to get to the deep seated pockets of fire. During the fire 100 people were evacuated. The building was destroyed and will be demolished. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
