Published: 30th January 2009

Fire crews from Gladesville, Ryde, Rhodes, Eastwood, Parramatta, Concord, Drummoyne, Rydalmere, Silverwater, Gordon, Crows Nest, Hazmat specialists from Alexandria and Greenacre and the Duty and Zone Commanders responded to a fire in Victoria Road, Gladesville this evening. Numerous Triple Zero (000) calls were received and the first fire crews were on scene within five minutes to find a three level building engulfed in flames. Fire crews concentrated efforts on stopping the fire spreading to the adjoining premises of a mechanical workshop that had a large pile of tyres and a veterinary practice. With the fire burning through the roof of the building firefighters attacked the blaze using fire hoses, moved the tyres away from the fire and set up a hydraulic ladder fire engine to give an aerial view of the fire. Hazmat specialists continually monitored water run off and the smoke as the fire was brought under control and extinguished. The building and its contents suffered extensive damage with no reports of any injuries. Fire crews remained on scene into the next day and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
