Numerous Triple Zero (000) calls were received this afternoon to a fire in a residential unit in Chandos Street, Ashfield. Firefighters from Ashfield, Leichhardt, Burwood, Concord, Marrickville, Glebe, Campsie, Drummoyne, City of Sydney, Hazmat specialists from Alexandria and senior officers responded to the fire. The first fire crews were on scene in four minutes to discover smoke billowing from a fire in a third level unit of a six level apartment building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly accessed the third level and made sure all of the occupants had escaped and then commenced an attack on the fire. The floors above the fire were heavily smoke logged requiring fire crews to carry out a search of all the floors and evacuate 15 people. Firefighters contained the fire to the one unit and in less than an hour the fire was extinguished and clean up work began. Ambulance paramedics treated five people at the scene and took one person to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is being investigated
